Imam Abu Yusuf ( may allah ta’ala be pleased with him) said : Knowlegde will not give a portion of itself unless you give it all of yourself ( devout yourself fully ). Even After giving all of yourself, you still have the risk ( of not attaining knowledge)
Since knowledge is a never-ending ocean, besides merely giving up the luxuries of this dunya, a student of ilm has to also forsake and actually sacrifice necessities. Such as eating less & decreasing sleep , to even studying when ill and in adverse conditions, a student needs to make ‘Ilm his greatest priority .
Shaykh Muhammad ‘Awwamah writes:
“It is essential for a student to carefully scrutinize his schedule. He then needs to discard, abandon and breakaway from all those things which becomes an impediment and obstruction in his journey of knowledge. He should believe that these things will prevent him from becoming successful and attaining his objective.”
(Ma’alim al-Irshadiyyah, pg: 142)
When we read about how Imam Abu Yusuf and ‘Allamah al-Mundhiri did not participate in the funerals of their very close and beloved ones, we can then understand why they excelled and became such great and illustrious scholars.
Following in their footsteps,
Shaykh Raghib at-Tabbagh buried his eldest son; Muhammad, and then came to Madrassah to conduct the lesson. Upon noticing the astonishment on the faces of his students, he exclaimed: “We lost our son, should we also lose the blessings of ‘Ilm?!”
Whilst we cannot sacrifice as much as these scholars, at bear minimum, we can abandon that which comes in the way for us to attain knowledge. We should at least bear with little difficulty to increase our knowledge.
A mere headache should never be a reason for us to miss our lessons. If we need to adjust our routine to be able to attend classes live, then that ‘sacrifice’ is nothing compared to the sacrifices of every scholar over the past 1400 years!
We would need to choose between temporary comfort or long term education, which continues to benefit a person in the hereafter, and ultimately leads him to gain the eternal companionship of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم .
May Allah Ta’ala make us value this knowledge. May He never deprive us because of our shortcomings. May He bless us with the blessings and effulgence of ‘ilm and may He raise us with the ‘Ulama on the day of Qiyamah.
آمين يارب العالمين
